Presidential count underway in Nigeria

world news

| |

The count is underway following what observers say has been the cleanest presidential election in Nigeria in decades, and the full results should be in within 48 hours.

Millions of electors turned out in a relatively calm atmosphere compared to past polls, and while there were isolated incidents of violence and attempted electoral fraud they were nowhere near on the same scale as in years gone by.

Early results suggest a lead for the outgoing president Goodluck Johnathan, and everywhere the count is taking place big crowds of people are gathering to follow the results and bear witness to the fairness of the process.

His only real rival if there is a second round is the former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari, who gets most of his support from the Muslim North of the country.
