The body of an Italian aid worker has been found in Gaza following an assault by Hamas security forces on a house in the Sheik Radouane district.
Vittorio Arrigoni was an activist for the International Solidarity Movement, a pro-Palestinian group. He had lived in Gaza since 2008, reporting as a blogger.
He was kidnapped by a previously unknown Jihadi Salafist group claiming affiliation with al-Qaeda.
The hostage-takers warned they would execute Arrigoni unless an unspecified number of their members were freed by Hamas officials in Gaza.
Salafist groups strictly interpret the Koran and want to create an Islamic State governed by Sharia law as practised by the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th Century.
There are five Salafist groups in Gaza, all sworn opponents of Hamas. Hamas has previously denied al-Qaeda has any presence in Gaza.
