Schalke and Real Madrid storm into the Champions League semis


Schalke advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history on Wednesday night after the Bundesliga outfit beat holders Inter.

Former Real Madrid star Raul and Benedikt Hoewedes hit the mark to offer the Germans a 2-1 win in the second leg at the Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen, which completed a stunning 7-3 aggregate win for Ralf Ragnick’s men. Raul scoring his 71st European goal.

Elsewhere Real Madrid cruised into the last four of the competition at the expense of English Premier League side Tottenham.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes fumbled a long-range effort from Cristiano Ronaldo on fifty minutes as the Spanish side posted a one nil win at White Hart Lane.

Thanks to an impressive first leg victory in Spain last week Jose Mourinho’s men progress 5-0 aggregate winners of the tie.

The semi-final line up for Europe’s top club competition is now complete.

Three-times winners Manchester United will play Schalke for a place in the May 28 final at Wembley stadium.

While one Spanish club is assured of making it to the show-piece match in London as Real Madrid take on Barcelona for the first time in European competition since 2002.

The semis begin on April 26 and 27.
