Growing unrest in Syria

There has been widespread violence across Syria, leading to conflicting reports about the number and identity of victims.

Protests against the ruling Baath Party of President Assad, have been taking place in the capital Damascus, Harasta, Latakia and Tartus. But the bloodiest incidents appear to have taken place in Deraa.

Protesters there claim over 20 of their supporters have been killed and many more injured.

State run Syrian TV, on the other hand, said 19 security force members have been shot dead and 75 wounded by what it called “sabateurs and conspirators”

In Tartus crowds chanted in support of protesters in Deraa:

“with our blood and with our souls we support you Deraa”

Human rights groups estimate that around 115 people have been killed in the violence so far.
