At least 19 people were shot and killed today by the authorities in Syria as protests against the government continue. This amateur footage shows crowds demonstrating in the city of Daraa. The clashes came when security forces opened fire on people throwing stones.
State television in Syria has until now ignored the unrest, insisting that the country was calm. But for the first time it has now broadcast film of people lurking behind a hedge, who were described as “vandals.”
Although the demonstrations began in Daraa in the south, protests have been reported from all over the country including Latakia, Homs and the suburbs of Damascus.
There were also demonstrations in the east of the country where people rallied despite the new reforms easing citizenship rules for Kurds.
It is estimated that 25 people have died in demonstrations across Syria today as the authorities struggle to retain control and suppress pro-democracy protests which began three weeks ago.
