Official preliminary results from Haiti suggest that flamboyant singer Michel Martelly has won the presidential election.

With the result expected to be borne out by the final figures, it will mean the poor and volatile Caribbean country will be run by a man with no previous political track record.

His opponent in the second round vote was experienced. She was the law professor and former Haitian senator Mirlande Manigat. But she was swept aside in an apparent Martelly landslide victory.
