Japan asks Russia for help with Fukushima

Japan’s Fukushima nuclear crisis continues with the plant’s operators now asking Russia to send its floating radiation treatment plant.

The “Suzuran” has been used to decommission nuclear submarines and treats radioactive liquid with chemicals and then stores it in a cement form.

With a build-up of highly radioactive water as a consequence of trying to cool the fuel rods, engineers at the plant have been forced to release less contaminated water into the sea.

In their attempts to stop radioactive leaks, the plant owners have used anything to hand including mixing sawdust with polymers and cement to seal a suspect crack. So far, nothing has helped.
