Bark together again: reunited after tsunami split

More than three weeks after being separated by Japan’s earthquake and tsunami, coastguards have reunited a dog and her owner following a daring air-sea rescue.

Two-year-old Ban had been spotted perched on debris that was floating nearly two kilometres out at sea.

Helicopter crews were searching the waters off the Miyagi prefecture for those still missing from the disaster when they sighted Ban drifting on the roof of a destroyed house.

It is not clear exactly how long she had been at sea but it took rescuers several hours to bring her to safety as she dodged among the wreckage to avoid the downdraught of the helicopter.

Ban’s owner saw the rescue on TV and contacted the animal refuge where the dog had been taken. She said she planned to spoil Ban – a lot!
