Representatives from more than 40 governments and international bodies are in London to discuss the future of Libya. With fighting raging between pro- and anti-Gaddafi-supporters, Italy has put forward a political plan to end the crisis which includes exile for the Libyan leader.

There is no official Libyan government representative at the meeting but delegates from the country’s rebel interim National Council are attending. It says it will hold free and fair elections to ensure a transition to democracy if Gaddafi were forced from power.

The gathering is expected to end by setting up a high-level steering group including Arab states.
