An explosion at a weapons factory in south Yemen has killed at least 50 people, according to doctors at a local hospital.
One report by the AFP news agency quoting a local government official says at least 70 are dead. Witnesses say the blast took place after residents in the town of Jaar broke into the plant to steal ammunition.
Reports yesterday said after clashes with the army, Islamist militants had taken control of the town and surrounding villages in Abyan province.
The Yemeni government has long been fighting an insurgency in the south.
