Two workers at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan have been taken to hospital after being exposed to high levels of radiation. The men had been attempting to restore the cooling system to the plant’s third reactor, which was damaged during the earthquake two weeks ago.
It is believed that the men came into contact with radiation-contaminated water, despite wearing protective suits. The water contained radiation levels 10,000 times higher than water used in cooling the reactor.
Both men were exposed to as much as o180 millisieverts of radiation – 100 is the lowest level thought to increase the chance of developing cancer.
