Engineers are also becoming increasingly concerned about a build up of salt from the sprayed sea water. Saline crystals could cause a rise in temperature inside the reactors.

Nearly 300 engineers, who are fast becoming national heroes for their brave fight to stabilise the plant had to be evacuated when black smoke was seen rising. They have now resumed work after a one-day suspension.
