Smoke rising from Fukushima plant raises alarm


Fears of radiation spreading have risen once more after smoke was seen rising from two of the most threatening reactors at Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear plant.

Technicians have, however, managed to attach power cables to all six reactors and have started a cooling pump at one of them.

But people evacuated from the 20-kilometre exclusion zone are still worried about radiation contamination and the discovery of higher than normal levels in vegetables and water have added to their alarm.

With the world’s worst atomic crisis in 25 years happening only 240 kilometres north of the capital Tokyo, there are concerns that the battle to avert a disastrous meltdown is far from won.
