Survivors search for hope among the rubble


The town of Otsuchi was not only hit by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami but a fire also ravaged the place. Most survivors have a stunned and lost look about them.

There are some happy reunions: two women who knew each other from childhood found one another after thinking each was dead.

One man searching through the debris said “I have no idea what is going to happen. The whole town has gone, the town next door is gone, it’s as if I am living in a dream.”

In Ofunato, a UK search and rescue team has been combing the area. House by house, room by room, they looked for signs of life. Despite the tonnes of lifting gear and other specialist equipment only the dead have been recovered.

Scenes of grief are to be seen all over Japan’s north-east coast and there are still some areas not yet reached.

But there has been one moment of joy,in Miyagi prefecture the cries of a four-month-old baby were heard by Japanese soldiers, she has been reunited with her parents.
