Emergency at second Japan nuclear plant

A second state of emergency has been declared over another Japanese nuclear plant, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the IAEA.

It quotes the Japanese authorities as saying the situation at the three reactors at the Onagawa site in northern Japan is “under control”.

The IAEA said the lowest state of emergency had been declared after excessive levels of radiation had been detected.

The prime minister Naoto Kan has said there will be sweeping power cuts in the coming days, due to the enforced shutting down of nuclear power stations following Friday’s earthquake.
