Chinese police enforced tight securtiy in Beijing on Sunday to prevent pro-democracy demonstrations taking hold in the captial.

Barricades were erected around Tiananmen Square where hundreds of officers were on duty.

This is the fourth consecutive week of what have become known as the “Jasmine” protests, inspired by events in Tunisia and other arab countries.

In Hong Kong protesters carried flowers and banners as they attempted to march to the front door of the central government office, but they were stopped by police who only allowed five demonstrators through.

A simultaneous protest took place in the Taiwanese capital Taipei.
