Japan has woken up to a nightmare that is all too real, sparked by its biggest earthquake on record and the deadly tsunami it triggered.
There are scenes of desolation, a state of emergency has been declared at two nuclear power plants and more than 1,000 people are dead or missing.
Dozens of aftershocks followed the initial quake, including a violent 6.8 magnitude tremor recorded on Saturday, also off the country’s east coast.
Amid fears that many thousands may have perished, tiny glimmers of hope remain. Reports said 81 people on a missing boat had been found safe and well.
