Libyan government lobbies for support

Fierce fighting across Libya has continued with key areas appearing to change hands several times in one day.

In the east, rebels were forced to withdraw from the front line town of Bin Jawad after a sustained counter offensive by Gaddafi forces, but reports now say they have regained some ground.

In Zawiyah which has been the closest rebels stronghold to Tripoli, Gaddafi militias earlier said they had finally re-taken the town at a heavy cost to its residents. But only hours later the rebels were once more claiming the city centre.

Although the country is split in roughly an east west divide, the situation is very fluid and the Libyan government has sent out emissaries to Brussels to put its view of the conflict.

Meanwhile rebels said for the first time Gaddafi war planes had struck facilities at the oil installation at Ras Lanuf.Libya’s state run television blamed “al Qaeda-backed” armed elements.
