Jubilant demonstrators gathered in the court buildings in Tunis. They were celebrating the ruling by a judge to dissolve the political party of former President Ben Ali. It has signaled the end of one of the last vestiges of the ousted leaders era.
The headquarters of the party, the Constitutional Democratic Rally – the RCD – had been the target of protesters in the capital Tunis.
The dismantling of the RCD had been one of their main demands after Ben Ali was toppled in January. The ruling now prevents a candidate being put forward in future elections.
The move comes just two days after the country’s interim prime minister announced a new government which will run the country until elections – scheduled to take place on 24 July – to choose a national assembly that will rewrite the constitution.
