"I'm no tormented weirdo", but Collins confirms retirement

Singer Phil Collins has confirmed press reports that he is calling it a day.

He says on his website that he is ending his career to devote more time to his young sons.

Recent days have seen conflicting accounts of the singer’s intentions. The 60-year-old says press coverage has portrayed him as a “tormented weirdo”.

He denies reports that he is quitting for reasons such as bad reviews, although he does not mention suggestions of health problems.

Phil Collins has sold an estimated 100 million albums and has won many awards since making his name as drummer and singer with Genesis in the 1970s.

From progressive rock to jazz to Motown, Collins’s music embraced several styles culminating in his last album “Going Back”.

His fans will be hoping that despite his announcement there will be a Phil Collins comeback before too long.
