Japan’s latest bullet train has made its maiden journey, leaving Tokyo for Shin-Aomori in the north of the country’s main island.

The “Hayabusa” or peregrine falcon is faster than the last model with a top speed of 300 kilometres an hour.

Such was the demand for places on the inaugural trip that one ticket reportedly fetched thousands of euros.

It is the first upgrade of the fleet for 14 years.
