China to step up domestic surveillance


The Chinese authorities have issued their strongest warning yet against internet appeals for pro-democracy protests inspired by the Arab world uprisings.

A state newspaper, the Beijing Daily, said “everyone knows that stability is a blessing and chaos is a calamity”.

Figures unveiled at the start of the annual parliamentary session show that spending on domestic security – police, surveillance and the courts – is to rise by 13.8 percent, outstripping the defence budget for the first time.
