Iranian ships to re-enter Suez

Two Iranian warships that passed through the Suez Canal last month en route to Syria are due to make the return journey in the next few hours.

The Alvand, a frigate and its supply ship the Kharg will pass from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. For Iran, it is a routine visit, but strategists say Tehran is trying to project its clout at a time of unrest in the region.

Israel considers Iran a serious threat and put its navy on alert when the ships entered the canal in February. They were the first Iranian vessels to navigate the waterway since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
