The world of fashion has been reacting to the dismissal of star designer John Galliano from the Dior label. He was sacked after being questioned by police over allegations that he hurled anti-Semitic insults at people in a Paris bar.
In a video posted online by Britain’s Sun newspaper, Galliano drunkenly tells a customer in a bar that he loves Hitler.
During Paris Fashion Week, industry insiders have expressed their sadness at the events which have led to the designer’s dismissal from Dior after 15 years as the label’s leading star
Michelle Kessler of the New York Times said “I think it’s unfortunate, it’s really sad but things happen, people make mistakes. I don’t think we should demonize him but I think it’s time for him to maybe get some help.”
Meanwhile Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman, who is Jewish, said she was deeply shocked and disgusted by Galliano’s behaviour. She has a contract to promote Dior perfume.
In a statement the chief executive of Dior, Sidney Toledano, described Galliano’s behaviour as “odious.”
