Real Madrid were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Lyon in their opening Champions League round of 16 clash in Gerland.
Los Merengues, who had failed to beat Lyon in their previous six Champions League meetings over the last five years, appeared to be on their way to ending that run following Karim Benzema’s opener.
However Lyon remained solid in defense and eventually equalised seven minutes from time thanks to Bafetimbi Gomis.
In the other game, France’s Nicolas Anelka scored a brace of goals to hand Chelsea a convincing 2-0 win over Copenhagen in Denmark.
The victory eases the pressure on manager Carlo Ancelotti after a poor run of form for the English champions who have slipped to fifth in the Premier League and were knocked out of the FA Cup after a penalty shootout loss to Everton on Saturday.
