Tens of thousands of people joined peaceful rallies in cities across the country on February 20 to demand the resignation of the government, dissolution of parliament, a freer press, less corruption and a new, more democratic constitution. There were scuffles as police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse crowds in Marrakech and Tangiers. King Mohamed VI remains a popular figure in Morocco, relative to other leaders like Gaddafi, Ben Ali and Mubarak. He was crowned in 1999 and has crafted a liberal image, although many demonstrators want to see his powers limited.
