The Sun’s largest solar flare in four years has hit the earth, an X-class eruption that can black out radios and blind satellites. However scientists say the most likely effect will be enhanced Northern lights in the sky.

It is one of a series of three that experts think may herald a new solar cycle after one of the quietest-ever 11 year periods. GPS technology could be also be disrupted.
