Mubarak stays despite huge passionate protests

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has refused to leave office, despite huge demonstrations calling for him to quit.

The man who has led the country for 30-years spoke to the nation where he ceded some of his powers to vice-president Omar Suliman, but did not resign his post.

As Mubarak spoke the hundreds of thousands packed in Tahrir Square fell silent until it became clear the 82-year-old was to remain in office.

At that point the crowd started chanting for him to go and what was a carnival atmosphere turned instantly sour as frustration and anger reached boiling point.
