The Israeli cabinet has named Major General Benny Gantz as the army’s new chief of staff – in a move it is hoped will end a period of uncertainty and scandal.
Gantz replaces Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi. He steps down on February 14 after what Defence Minister Ehud Barak simply described as ethical and professional misconduct.
Barak had wanted to replace him with Yoav Galant but he has been ruled out because of a property scandal.
At the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed the need for stability in the Israeli Defence Force, especially in the current climate.
Gantz’s appointment still has to go before an ethics commission, before final cabinet approval next week.
