While Cairo is hotting up it is ice cool in Alex, Egypt’s second city. Demonstrations there are continuing in a peaceful atmosphere, and it appears a very low-profile police and army presence, perhaps a reflection of how stretched the security forces are by the unrest.

“What is happening now is the end of Mubarak, he is on his last breath, he should be tried for the crimes he has committed,” said one young man.
After the violence of yesterday and overnight the regime appears to be taking a step back, but the people remain determined to march forwards.
