Clashes have broken out in Egypt between supporters and opponents of President Hosni Mubarak.
Dozens of injuries have been reported near Tahrir Square, the scene of massive peaceful demonstrations yesterday to demand that Mubarak quit.
Earlier, an army spokesman appeared on state television, calling on protesters to stay off the streets and help the country return to normal.
Ismail Etman said the protesters’ message has been delivered and their demands have been heard.
Now, he said, it is time to stay off the streets and help the army to bring stability back to Egypt.

The spokesman added that the army is not acting through force but for the love of Egypt. He said the people are the only ones capable of restoring normality to the country.
The army has previously stated that it will not use force against the demonstrators. However it has told pro-Mubarak activists not to attack anti-government demonstrators or risk facing a “firm” response.
