One hundred years ago wealthy German diplomat Max Freiherr von Oppenheim uncovered some ancient stone statues at Tell Halaf in what is now Syria.

He brought them to Berlin where they were destroyed by a bomb during World War II.

The restored statues of giant birds, lions, and goddesses are the focus a new exhibition “Rescued Gods of the Palace of Tell Halaf” at Berlin’s Pergamon Museum until August 14.
