German navy captain Norbert Schatz has been told to leave his commission, the “Gorch Fock” and fly home to Germany to face questioning over the death of a female naval cadet.
The ship – a training vessel – is currently off the coast of Argentina. It will be sailed home by an interim captain.
While Schatz has some explaining to do, his crew appears to have remained loyal to their captain. They gave him a formal farewell, hoisting a banner which said “one commander, one crew, one ship”.
Meanwhile an on-board investigation is continuing.
It was last November that a cadet fell to her death from the mast of the prestigious training ship. Since then stories of debauchery and drunkenness have surfaced along with allegations of abuse by the crew of the trainees.
The Gorch Fock is due to sail home immediately.
