Travellers flee Egyptian unrest

Foreign nationals flocked to Cairo’s main airport on Saturday, desperate to get out of the country.

The number of airlines cancelling flights is growing and tickets are scarce.

In Barcelona, those who had managed to find a seat were clearly relieved to be back home.

They spoke of tanks around their hotels and a general panic.

“We moved fast,” said one tourist. “We asked to change our flight but we just saw chaos. Everybody wanted to leave. There were no flights, there were no tickets. There was not much information and no internet so we couldn’t phone our families.”

Many Western countries have warned against all but essential travel to Egypt.
