The number of dead from a bomb blast in Iraq has climbed to 48 according to officials.
The suspected car bomb went off during a funeral in a Shi’ite area of Baghdad. Dozens of people were also injured in the blast.
This is the latest in a line of bombings that have killed over 100 people in the last two weeks. Insurgents are thought to be stepping up attacks ahead of the full withdrawal of US troops from the country, scheduled for the end of this year. Their hope is to undermine the ability of the Shi’ite-led government of Nuri al-Maliki to run the country without a foreign military presence.
There were at least four other separate bombings in Baghdad on Thursday, killing a combined total of at least five people and leaving more than 20 others wounded.
