World number one Rafael Nadal suffered a shock straight sets defeat to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Wednesday.
A leg injury suffered early in the match made the 24 year old’s quest to become only the third man, and the first since 1969, to hold all four Grand Slam titles at once almost impossible.
Seventh seed Ferrer showed no mercy throughout the contest, finally winning through 6-4 6-2 6-3.
He will next lock horns with Britain’s Andy Murray for a place in the final.
