Albania braces for more unrest

The funerals of all three victims of Friday’s anti-government protests in Albania have now taken place.

Three civilians died of gunshot wounds, prompting both sides to blame each other for the violence. Fatmir Hyka’s funeral was attended by the Socialist opposition leader and Tirana Mayor, Edi Rama. He has called for another rally this coming Friday, again in front of Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s office. Berisha is organising a counter-rally for Saturday and rejects claims of fraud in the 2009 election.

At an extraordinary session on Sunday night, parliament ordered a commission into what the speaker described as Friday’s “attempted coup d’etat”.

The opposition wants an enquiry into the shooting of protesters who were demanding an end to the Berisha government.
