Gunfire has reportedly broken out in the Tunisian capital Tunis, with unconfirmed reports of fatalities.
Another person died in overnight clashes which brought the unrest seen elsewhere in the country since the end of last year to the centre of power.
The popular discontent has spilled out from the town of Sidi Bouzid, reaching Tunis and the city of Douz, where a university professor is believed to be one of two people reportedly killed.
In Douz marchers surrounded a variety of official buildings. At least one police station was attacked and police vehicles were set on fire.
The army is now deploying armoured vehicles in Tunis, but in Douz confrontations were more face to face.
