Spain’s Carlos Sainz clinched the ninth stage of the auto section of the Dakar Rally on Tuesday, closing in on overall leader and teammate Nasser Al-Attiyah.
The 48-year-old secured the 235km special ahead of his teammate by 1 minute and 56 seconds in what was a thrilling race around Copiapo.
Al Attiyah still leads in the overall standings by 3 minutes and 18 seconds.
America’s Jonah Street produced a stunning performance to outclass his opponents in the bike category.
Meanwhile, France’s Cyril Despres put pressure on current leader Marc Coma, after finishing one minute and five seconds before his rival.
Despres is now eight minutes and 14 seconds adrift in the overall standings with Francisco Lopez Contrado, currently lying in third place.
