Two suspected ETA members arrested

world news

| |

Just a day after Madrid rejected a permanent ceasefire announcement from the Basque separatist group ETA, two suspected members have been arrested.

Observers say the operation in France and Spain is a sign the Spanish government intends to keep up pressure on the organisation.

A man reported to be a computer expert has been taken into custody in France, while his girlfriend was arrested in Spain.

For the first time, ETA announced it was willing to let international monitors verify a new truce, but Madrid said the declaration did not go far enough.

It says what the Spanish people want is for the group to completely renounce violence, disband and lay down its weapons.
