Spanish govt: ETA truce not enough

We do feel more at ease, but the announcement does not go far enough.

That is the reaction from the Spanish government to the ETA announcement.

Ministers insist the group has to renounce violence and lay down its weapons.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, briefly spoke to reporters.

“You know that all the democratic governments, all the political parties have insisted time and again that the only thing we wanted to hear from the terrorist group ETA is that they put an irreversible and definitive end to their activities,” he said.

“Today it’s clear that once again they have not done what the democratic parties had hoped for. They have not done that.

“If you ask me ‘are you more at ease than you were yesterday, I would honestly say ‘yes’. If you ask me ‘is this the end?’ I would say ‘no’. If you ask me ‘is this what Spanish society has been hoping for?’ I would say ‘no’.”
