Club Med looks east for growth

With profits stagnant in its traditional markets the French leisure group Club Med has opened its first resort in China.

Yabuli is a ski resort in north-east China aimed at the small – but wealthy – number of skiers in the country, estimated by holiday industry experts to number around five million.

Open just weeks the Club Med facility is one of a growing number of ski resorts in China.

Visitor Shen Xianying said: “Several of my friends said that Yabuli has China’s best skiing, The conditions are really very good, the natural environment, and the conditions that they have created for skiing are really great.”

Within four years Club Med aims to open four more of its holiday villages in China and wants the country to be its second biggest market after France.

Over the next decade the World Travel and Tourism Council expects the travel sector in China to expand faster than in any other country.
