US Senator praises southern Sudan vote

world news

The importance of the independence vote in southern Sudan has been underlined by the appearance of several international figures, among them the influential US Senator John Kerry, former president Jimmy Carter and Hollywood star George Clooney.

Kerry said Sudan’s government deserved credit for the 2005 peace agreement between north and south.

He said the period between now and possible independence in July must be used to resolve issues like the sharing of oil revenues and economic assistance.

Our correspondent in Juba, Mohamed Elhamy, said:

“Kerry’s visit undoubtedly shows strong support for the referendum and the government of southern Sudan. But it is conditional on the success of the transitional phase if the south chooses to breakaway.”
