Shaky start for Hungary’s EU presidency: PM

world news

Hungary has formally taken over the rotating presidency of the European Union but, with controversy surrounding a tight new Hungarian media law, even the prime minister admitted that their stewardship had not got off to a good start.

Many foreign companies have also added a strong voice of dissent against Hungary’s so-called ‘crisis taxes.’

The prime minister in Budapest, Viktor Orban, said: ‘We are ready to reorganise Hungary completely within a year. We, Hungarians, have understood that if we wanted to withstand the competition, then we cannot live the way we have lived so far.’

Talks between the 27 European Commissioners and their Hungarian counterparts are due to focus on the most important elements of the six month presidency programme. That includes improving Europe’s ability to weather economic crises, energy policy and climate change.
