“Strong Europe” proclaimed signs behind EU and Hungarian leaders as they posed for the cameras in Budapest today.

But Hungary has got off to a particularly rough ride at the start of its six month stint as president of the EU.

There was no escaping the thorny topic that has sparked an outcry as European Commission chiefs met Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The country’s controversial new media law, which critics say could lead to state censorship, is being examined by the EU executive.

Today, Orban indicated a willingness to defuse tensions, reiterating that his centre-right government is ready to modify the measure if the EU so requires.
