For culture this year, follow the north star, as two of Europe’s designated capitals of culture lie that way: Tallinn in Estonia and Turku in Finland.

Promoting Estonia’s potential, fashion designer Liisi Eesmaa said: “In a few years, Tallinn could become like Berlin or even be the new Berlin. We have a totally unique culture. Being a small country doesn’t mean being narrow-minded or short on ideas. We think big, we have a spirit of risk and the courage to do things.”

Tallinn’s celebrations for new year’s eve reflected this as well. It included high-flying symbols of European culture, conveying a determination to raise Estonia’s own profile in 2011.
