Consumers in Germany have been warned to be on the look out for contaminated eggs. Thousands of farms have been forced to halt sales.

The warning comes after highly toxic dioxin was found in poultry and pig feed. More than 8,000 hens had to be culled on one farm. The origin of the contamination, its been reported, was caused by an animal food manufacturer using fatty acids meant for industrial purposes in chicken feed.

“These substances which don’t belong in the processing chain have got there either by criminal activity or by sheer carelessness,” explained

Johannes Remmel, Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia

The company at the centre of the scandal Harles and Jentzsch admitted it had made a mistake. Investigations are underway to see whether any crime had been committed. An EU spokesman said there is no need to ban German food exports because so far only Germany had been affected.
