Brown replaces Schwarzenegger in California

world news

He is no Mr Universe or Hollywood action hero but Jerry Brown is hoping he can succeed where

Arnold Schwarzenegger failed in fixing California’s finances.

The Democrat has been sworn in as governor, replacing the former Terminator star who, after two terms in office, was not allowed to run again.

This is not a new exercise for the 72-year-old. Brown was previously governor of the most populous US state from 1975 to 1983. This time, his big challenge is to help California claw its way out of the economic crisis and slash its huge budget deficit.

Austrian-born Schwarzenegger has yet to reveal where his future lies, more than seven years after the Republican’s California dreams came true. There is speculation he could try for Congress or even bridge the political divide by accepting an environmental portfolio in the Obama administration.
