At least 21 people are now reported dead in Egypt after a car bomb exploded outside a church in the northern city of Alexandria.

It happened at around half past midnight as worshippers left the building following a New Year’s service.

Hundreds of Christians took to the streets in protest after the attack, clashing with police and Muslims.

Christians make up about 10 per cent of the population in Muslim-majority Egypt where there has been a recent increase in violence between its religious communities.

No one has yet said they carried out the blast.

As ambulance crews gathered up body parts, witnesses reported Christians chanting: “We sacrifice our souls and blood for the cross.”
