As night fell in Paris, a group of people gathered for a candlelit vigil.

They had one thing in common. All were either the friends or relatives of two kidnapped French journalists.

The parents of Stéphane Taponier have not seen their son for more than a year. He was seized in Afghanistan on December the 30th, 2009, with his colleague, Hervé Ghesquière.

Some feel the government has let them down. “We need to keep the pressure on”, one woman said,” it is good that so many people have turned up.”

In a bid to publicise their plight, the men’s faces were projected onto the iconic Parisian landmark the Arc de Triomphe at daybreak this morning.

Rallies have also been held across France.

The French government insists it is doing all it can to get the men released.
